چکیده

In many path planning situations we would like to find a path of constrained Euclidean length in R2 that minimises a line integral. We call this the Continuous Length-Constrained Minimum Cost Path Problem (C-LCMCPP). Generally, this will be a non-convex optimization problem, for which continuous approaches only ensure locally optimal solutions. However, network discretisations yield weight constrained network shortest path problems (WCSPPs), which can in practice be solved to global optimality, even for large networks; we can readily find a globally optimal solution to an approximation of the C-LCMCPP. Solutions to these WCSPPs yield feasible solutions and hence upper bounds. We show how networks can be constructed, and a WCSPP in these networks formulated, so that the solutions provide lower bounds on the global optimum of the continuous problem. We give a general convergence scheme for our network discretisations and use it to prove that both the upper and lower bounds so generated converge to the global optimum of the C-LCMCPP, as the network discretisation is refined. Our approach provides a computable lower bound formula (of course the upper bounds are readily computable). We give computational results showing the lower bound formula in practice, and compare the effectiveness of our network construction technique with that of standard grid-based approaches in generating good quality solutions. We find that for the same computational effort, we are able to find better quality solutions, particularly when the length-constraint is tighter.

The Minimum Manhattan Network Problem: A Fast Factor-3 Approximation

Given a set of nodes in the plane and a constant t ≥ 1, a Euclidean t-spanner is a network in which, for any pair of nodes, the ratio of the network distance and the Euclidean distance of the two nodes is at most t. Such networks have applications in transportation or communication network design and have been studied extensively. In this paper we study 1-spanners under the Manhattan (or L1-) m...

A Fuzzy Random Minimum Cost Network Flow Programming Problem

In this paper, a fuzzy random minimum cost flow problem is presented. In this problem, cost parameters and decision variables are fuzzy random variables and fuzzy numbers respectively. The object of the problem is to find optimal flows of a capacitated network. Then, two algorithms are developed to solve the problem based on Er-expected value of fuzzy random variables and chance-constrained pro...

A Metaheuristic Algorithm for the Minimum Routing Cost Spanning Tree Problem

The routing cost of a spanning tree in a weighted and connected graph is defined as the total length of paths between all pairs of vertices. The objective of the minimum routing cost spanning tree problem is to find a spanning tree such that its routing cost is minimum. This is an NP-Hard problem that we present a GRASP with path-relinking metaheuristic algorithm for it. GRASP is a multi-start ...

A New Algorithm for the Discrete Shortest Path Problem in a Network Based on Ideal Fuzzy Sets

A shortest path problem is a practical issue in networks for real-world situations. This paper addresses the fuzzy shortest path (FSP) problem to obtain the best fuzzy path among fuzzy paths sets. For this purpose, a new efficient algorithm is introduced based on a new definition of ideal fuzzy sets (IFSs) in order to determine the fuzzy shortest path. Moreover, this algorithm is developed for ...

Approximation Algorithms for Budget Constrained Network Upgradeable Problems

We study budget constrained network upgradeable problems. We are given an undirected edge weighted graph G = (V,E) where the weight an edge e ∈ E can be upgraded for a cost c(e). Given a budget B for improvement, the goal is to find a subset of edges to be upgraded so that the resulting network is optimum for B. The results obtained in this paper include the following. 1. Maximum Weight Constra...
